If you are a federal employee who has been hurt on the job, you may be eligible for medical care through the Federal Employees' Compensation Act, known as FECA. The program is run by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Workers' Compensation Programs, or OWCP. At Core Medical Center, we treat injured federal workers across Kansas and Missouri, and we know how the federal system actually works day to day.

The federal process has its own forms, rules, and billing requirements. Understanding them early makes a real difference in how smoothly your claim moves and how quickly you get the care you need.

What FECA Is and Who Qualifies

FECA provides benefits to civilian federal employees who suffer a work related injury or illness. That covers a wide range of jobs, including postal workers, VA hospital staff, TSA agents, federal law enforcement, and civilian employees on military bases. If your job caused or contributed to your injury, you likely qualify.

The law covers two broad categories. The first is a traumatic injury, meaning something that happens in a single incident, like a fall or a lifting injury during one shift. The second is an occupational disease, meaning a condition that develops over time from repeated activity or exposure. Both can be valid grounds for a FECA claim.

What Benefits Are Available

Injured federal workers under FECA are entitled to several kinds of benefits. Medical care for your accepted condition is covered at no cost to you. Just as important, you have the right to choose your own treating physician. That is a meaningful difference from many state workers' compensation systems, where your choices can be limited.

If your injury keeps you off the job, FECA may provide wage loss compensation while you recover. The program also covers vocational rehabilitation if you need support returning to work, and it can provide compensation for permanent impairment in certain cases.

How the Claims Process Works

A FECA claim starts with notifying your supervisor and completing the right form. For a traumatic injury you file form CA-1. For an occupational disease you file form CA-2. Your agency then submits the claim to OWCP.

Once OWCP accepts the claim, it assigns a claim number. Your treating physician uses that number when billing for care and when submitting medical reports. Accurate, timely documentation is one of the most important parts of a successful claim, and it is an area where the wrong provider can unintentionally hold things up.

Why the Right Provider Matters

Federal workers' compensation does not work like regular health insurance, and it does not work like state workers' comp either. It has its own forms, codes, and billing procedures. Many medical offices have never handled an OWCP claim, and that unfamiliarity can lead to delays, rejected bills, and a lot of frustration for the injured worker who is already trying to heal.

At Core Medical Center, we work directly with injured federal employees and understand OWCP requirements. We handle the documentation and billing so you can focus on getting better. We treat the full range of work related musculoskeletal injuries, including back injuries, neck injuries, joint injuries, and repetitive strain conditions. Our federal workers' compensation program is built specifically for the realities of the federal system, from the first form to the final report.
