OWCP Case Expansion & Reopening
Injuries change over time. If a new condition is connected to your accepted federal injury, or a closed claim needs to reopen, we build the medical evidence the Department of Labor requires.
In short: if new conditions are connected to your accepted federal injury, or a closed claim needs to reopen, we provide the objective medical evidence and narrative reports the Department of Labor requires to expand or reopen it.
The process
How Case Expansion Works
-
Review Your Accepted Claim
We examine your accepted conditions and current medical records to see what is documented and what is missing.
-
Identify Connected Conditions
Many injuries lead to consequential or secondary conditions over time. We evaluate whether new symptoms are medically connected to your original federal injury.
-
Build the Medical Evidence
We provide the objective findings and narrative reports the Department of Labor requires to expand the claim or reopen a closed one.
-
Coordinate the Update
We work with you and your representative so the expansion or reopening is supported by the documentation it needs.

OWCP Case Expansion & Reopening FAQ
What is OWCP case expansion?
Case expansion adds a new condition to an already-accepted federal claim when that condition is medically connected to your original injury, for example a consequential injury or a condition that developed from the first one. We provide the medical evidence the Department of Labor needs to accept the addition.
Can a closed OWCP claim be reopened?
Often, yes. If your condition has worsened or a new connected condition has appeared, a closed claim may be reopened with current objective medical documentation. We evaluate your situation and provide the supporting reports.
What is a consequential condition?
A consequential condition is a new problem that results from your accepted injury, for example a knee or hip issue caused by an altered gait after a back injury. When medically connected, it can be added to your claim.
Do I need a lawyer to expand my case?
Not necessarily. The core requirement is strong medical evidence connecting the new condition to your accepted injury, which we provide. We coordinate with your representative if you have one.
How soon can I be seen?
Same-week appointments are typically available so the evaluation and documentation can begin promptly.
